I actually suspect art shows like this represent a larger volume of the art market than galleries ( if you exclude pieces over $50000) but oddly, get very little attention from the academyMichaelhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16411197732507285430noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6633621665763939304.post-19207181183802141752011-02-15T00:29:51.794-06:002011-02-15T00:29:51.794-06:00Hi, my name is Marshall Perry Mosley and I just wa...Hi, my name is Marshall Perry Mosley and I just wanted to thank you for your comments of my piece, i wish i could say it wasnt in a landfill somewhere now..

http://www.facebook.com/perry.mosleyPerry Mosleynoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6633621665763939304.post-64342480750172537912010-11-18T20:14:46.741-06:002010-11-18T20:14:46.741-06:00My pleasure. I don't like it but there is a stigma attached to "art", and after so many years of considering it w a capital a it's hard to approach it otherwise, even when I want to tell myself I can be objective.
Great post.
W.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6633621665763939304.post-83968325506761164392010-04-14T09:39:13.136-05:002010-04-14T09:39:13.136-05:00If you look carefully, all the Ober sculptures are...If you look carefully, all the Ober sculptures are slightly different. Just sa...Don't say "more pedestrian"! Just say different. My tastes are pretty broad--that's why I went to the Festival. I mean, I loved that Jay Long painting and those Larry Stephenson watercolors. But my point is that there is this thing we call the art world that includes galleries like Barbara Davis, spaces like Diverse Works, programs like the MFA program at UH or the Core Program at Glassell, and more internationally, magazines like Artforum and auction houses like Christie's, that traffic ina kind of art that is totally distinct from this art. And it's interesting to think about why.

Because I'm also interested in comics (and the original art of comics), this question--what is in the art world and what isn't, is one that I think about a lot. I think there are aesthetic/theoretical distinctions, but I also think that these various art worlds or art communities are split for sociological and economic reasons. And (as weird as it may sound), I get a lot of pleasure thinking about those sociological/economic issues surrounding art.

But suffice it to say, I saw a lot of stuff there I liked (some of which I bought), and I definitely plan to attend again--maybe this fall for the Downtown version. And you are totally right about buying stuff for the house. If I had a garden I would have snapped up something by Fred Conlon. I also saw another artist who had some wonderful graphics that I want to put in my kitchen.

I think the festival is a great way to reach people that don't normally experience art at all and unfortunately that is a large demographic in Houston. Ease them in to the idea of something other than Thomas Kinkade.laanbahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09314884425401935658noreply@blogger.com
