Coolest Public Art of the Day

Robert Boyd

I have "Karl Wirsum" on my Google Alerts and this popped up.

This is a sculpture in Munster, Indiana. It is made of steel with enamel colors baked on. It is part of a really ambitious public art project (public in the sense of available to the public--the funding and ownership of the pieces seems to be both public and private). Munster is a suburb of Chicago with a population of about 22,000. It seems really small to have this much public art. I imagine one superhumanly energetic art booster pushed and prodded the local politicians, bureaucrats, and corporate community relations liaison officers until it happened.

But who hires Karl Wirsum to create public art?  He's one of my favorite artists, but I have to admit, he is one of the last people I would think of to design a piece of plop art. I wish I could find more photos of it!
