Seen on North Shephard

Robert Boyd

The Art Guys, The Giant Art Guys, metal, wood, polyurethane, paint, 1998

Somehow I never noticed these guys before. I pulled into the lot of Clark Motors, and a guy came out. I asked permission to take a photo and he said, go ahead, lots of folks do. He pointed out a building just to the east and said The Art Guys used to have their studio right there. So what was the motive for this curious sculpture. On one hand, it seems of a piece with the Art Guys' often mysterious actions. On the other hand, could it be that they wanted to establish good relations with their neighbor by offering an eye-catching gift? The road-side attention grabber--the spastic wind-dancer, the giant inflatable gorilla, etc.--are part of the Houston landscape. Why wouldn't an artist want some of that action?

Anyway, I added it to my woefully out-of-date Houston Art Map, which could be useful if you are planning an art-oriented driving or biking trip through town.
