25 Lighters

Robert Boyd

Andy Coolquitt, no I didn’t go to any museums here I hate museums museums are just stores that charge you to come in there are lots of free museums here but they have names like real stores, installation 2012, mixed media

The thing about Andy Coolquitt's art is that it doesn't surrender itself up for interpretation easily. The title of this installation which was on view at Devin Borden Gallery, no I didn’t go to any museums here I hate museums museums are just stores that charge you to come in there are lots of free museums here but they have names like real stores, is suggestive. The museums he's talking about, based on what is displayed here, must be thrift stores. The items here are "vintage" in a really grungy way. But maybe the real museum being referenced is the street. For example, unless Coolquitt is one really heavy smoker, all those lighters must have come from somewhere else.

That is one hell of a lot of lighters. More than 25, to be sure. But the phrase "25 Lighters" is what comes to mind when I see that piece. That was the title of a song by DJ DMD, and the lighters in question refer to crack lighters, which are Bics that have been adjusted to make a much larger than normal flame. Apparently Coolquitt sources his lighters from crack houses.

This song was recently covered by ZZ Top, of all people.

Did Andy Coolquitt intend to make us think about crack when he made that Bic tower? I don't know, but that's what it makes me think of. You can see it and decide for yourself through October 27 at Devin Borden Gallery. As for DJ DMD, he recently found Jesus and he's remade his crack epic as "25 Bibles."
