Houston's High School Artists at the Art League

The Scholastic Gold Key Art & Writing Awards has been around since the 1920s. I entered when I was in high school in the late 70s/early 80s. There are local winners and national winners, and the Art League displays the work of the local winners every year. Here are some of my favorites from this year.

Photobucket
Neda Alturki, Guardian Angel, The Village School

The wings are a collage of photos of children from the Depression.

Photobucket
Kori Mixon, Carnival Ride, Cypress Springs High School

Photobucket
Abigail Firth, Three Graces, Cy-Fair High School

This is my absolute favorite, and my photograph fails in every way to do it justice. Go to the Art League and check it out. I hope this is indicative of Firth's work, and i hope that she keeps taking photos, because this is great and I'd love to see more.

Photobucket
Emily Han, Double Vision, Clear Springs High School

A lovely and clever work of water-color.

Photobucket
James Pacifico, The Story of My Life, Clear Lake High School

 Photobucket
Davis Dang, Con Ut (Youngest Son), Kerr High School

Photobucket
Anthony Phan, Breakdown, Elsik High School

Photobucket
Madison Borowitz, Spinning Elements, Clear Creek High School

This is my second favorite piece. I wish it had been on a pedestal instead of the floor. Nonetheless, I love the colors and the complexity and the ambition of it. These are only a small number of the pieces in the show. I'm not sure how long the show is up (I can't find any information about it on The Art League's website), so make a point of seeing it as soon as possible.
