Another Year, Another Artcrawl

I've been going to Artcrawl for several years. Some things are always the same, evolving slightly over the years. Like this little dilapidated house at the corner of McKee and Nance.



That's how it looked in 2010. Then in 2012, someone had added this sign to it.



This year, it looked like this:



I look forward to taking a picture of it every year. But let's be honest--it's slowly deteriorating. And that was the feeling of Artcrawl this year. For example, every year I've gone to Artcrawl, the building on Richey Street where Oxheart is located always has had a big bunch of exhibiting artists in a large central room. This year, nothing:



At least the tattoo parlor next to Oxheart had some art up--not to mention some tattoo artists at work.



Not only were there fewer venues for art this year, there were a lot fewer people. I hope that this is purely a result of the weather--cold, windy and damp. I hope this isn't a trend because one of the very great values I've see with Artcrawl is that in past years it has always drawn in a large, diverse audience. I go to art events every week and usually see the same people at them (and even within the events and openings I attend, the audience is segmented--there is little overlap between people who attend openings at Colquitt St. galleries and people who show up for El Rincón Social shows). But we can't forget that Artcrawl is just another "entertainment choice," and on a grey drizzly cold day, people may choose not to walk around a bunch of unheated old warehouses.

Mother Dog Studios is the driving force behind Artcrawl and they always have something special in their studios for the event. This year was no different. They had a show of "snake"-based art and included in this was an actual snake wrangler who brought his snakes and let people handle them.



That's where I saw painter Bas Poulos, talking with a lady snake wrangler who was showing off their collection of venomous snakes commonly found in the Houston are. Yikes.



Poulos, a retired Rice University art professor, had a couple of pieces in the snake show.

He told me that his model was for some reason reluctant to model with her nipples showing, so they taped them like so. I replied that taped nipples were a thousand times dirtier than visible nipples.

In the same room as these paintings, a pair of air-brush artists were body-painting a cobra onto a very patient young woman who didn't seem to mind 1) that there were dozens of people taking phone photos and 2) that it was fucking cold in the unheated studio.

Solomon Kane had one of his encrusted polychromatic sculptures in the show. And I made a quick stop at Brandon Araujo's studio. (That's him in the hoodie. Did I mention that the studios were unheated?)



Most of the work on display I had seen before. But he showed me some large works in progress that he hadn't hung. We were standing in front of one talking about it and I noticed that there was a lady hovering nearby. I thought maybe she wanted to ask Brandon something so I stepped aside and he greeted her. She was apparently unknown to him--just a random Artcrawler. She wanted to take a picture of the big unfinished painting. Brandon politely told her no--it was a work in progress.



In past Artcrawls, the streets have been full of people. It was just too cold this time, but not for the guy in shorts in the picture above. He wasn't going to let 45 degree weather slow him down.

 Over at Atelier Jacquinet, there was this nice model shrimp boat.


And this guitarist on the kitchen counter. (Atelier Jacquinet always has good music every year. I don't know who this singer was, but she had some adoring fans.)



The Last Concert Cafe also always has some good music, but folks didn't linger in front of the outdoor stage this year. I liked that the guy on the right got dressed up for the occasion.



This broken vinyl record in the dead winter grass was a poignant symbol of something or other.



Over at the Foundry, there was a group pop-up show featuring David Graeve, Michael Meazell, Alfredo Scaroina, Patrick Renner, Felipe Lopez, Cecilia Johnson and Lester Marks. It's where Graeve's studio is, so he was in the position to stage his work quite dramatically. For example:

 The rest was hung a little more casually.




And here is Alfredo Scaroina himself. He and his crew were serving tacos (yum!) and beer, so it was hard to leave the Foundry. But I pressed on.



My next stop was Studio Twenty Twenty (I think) on Commerce Street. I liked this Ozzy/O.J. combo. The Ozzy stencil was painted right on the wall.




Then I swung by Super Happy Fun Land. They're a bit off the beaten track for Artcrawl, but they go all out.

This band, Afternoon Power, was playing. Not bad! I hung out listening to them for quite a while, but finally went over to El Rincón Social for a very nice photography exhibit, which deserves more than a drive-by post like this. After hanging out there for a while, I headed home, stopping to pick up some champagne at Spec's (for mimosas at Sunday brunch). 



Artcrawl is a Houston tradition, just like purple drank. Long may it thrive.

Houston Galeria: Jacqueline Gendel, Tim Lokiec, and Peter LaBier at The Brandon, 7–10 pm. It's been 35 year since 'Bad' Painting (featuring Houston's own Earl Staley) and it still seems to be a thing. The Brandon is living up to its promise to bring interesting non-Houstonian contemporary artists to town with this show.

Ex-ile featuring Blanka Amezkua, Darwin Arevalo, Rushern Baker IV, Arthur Brum, Caroline Chandler, Oscar Rene Cornejo, Sandra Cornejo, Abigail Deville, Tomashi Jackson, Alex Larsen, Eric Mack, Harold Mendez, Robert Nava, Tammy Nguyen, Sondra Perry, Ronny Quevedo, David Salinas, Rodrigo Valenzuela and Sam Vernonat at El Rincón Social, 8 pm – 2 am. One night only. The description of the show is soporific: "Exile explores the boundaries between individual expression and the disintegration of human traces on the economic, social, and political field. The artists featured in this exhibition use artifacts as a means to evoke the obscurity of this disintegration — exploring with materials to communicate and testify to a suppressed history. Exile presents works that recontextualize exiled historical narratives into present personal narratives." It goes on in a similar manner for another paragraph. I hope the art isn't as boring as this.

26th Annual Día de los Muertos Gala & Retablo Silent Auction at Lawndale Art Center, 6 to 9 pm. Ugh, its gala season again. The people at CultureMap and Paper City must be ecstatic. Well, if you have to go to a gala, Lawndale's Día de los Muertos is a good one because you get an opportunity to bid on moderately priced little pieces of art, like this lovely one by Bas Poulos, which combines "mid-century abstraction" and "dirty old man" into one slyly beautiful composition.

SATURDAY


Dennis Harper's Time Machine will be auctioned off.

BOXtoberfest! at BOX 13 ArtSpace, 12 to 7 pm. This is about as close to a gala as Box 13 is gonna get. It is a day-long party that will culminate with a parade--the float for which will be made on site live with audience participation. Bands, a raffle, beer, artists, etc.


Oscar Guerra

Oscar Guerra and Selected African Objects at Gallery Jatad, 3 to 6 pm. A show delayed by fire, Gallery Jatad reopens for good this time (fingers crossed!). Oscar Guerra will finally get his moment in the sun.

Daniel Anguilu: Kaleidoscope at PEVETO, 6 to 8 pm. Also straight from his triumph in Tulsa (Gallery Row is showing a lot of work by the Cargo Space artists, it seems!), Daniel Anguilu's stained-glass-like spray paint paintings will be on display.

Cargo Space: How Does It Rate? A Scientific Study

Cargo Space made its debut last night. It looks like there is still some work to do, which better be done fast. It is soon taking a long trip to Tulsa, bringing artists to the prairie. They are scheduled to be in Tulsa at the Hardesty Arts Center on October 4. Chris Sperandio, the prime mover behind Cargo Space will be the Neal Cassidy of this trip. The Cargo Space will be shuffling Houston artists up to Tulsa in several trips. The traveling artists are Daniel Anguilu (one of the artists who painted the exterior, along with Eyeful Art, Dual and Beau Pope), Mike Beradino, Natasha Bowdoin, Robert Pruitt, Rahul Mitra and Seth Mittag.

You can write messages to your fellow passengers on the chalk boards, which will come in handy when various passengers decide they aren't talking to one another anymore.


It looks good but not complete. For one thing, no privacy curtains around the beds.

As I was looking at Cargo Space, especially the paint job, I instantly thought of Ken Kesey's bus and the cross country "acid test" trip it took. And that got me thinking about other famous RV-type vehicles. How does Cargo Space stack up? Well, we won't know for sure until Cargo Space hits the road, but here're our RV-comparisons.

Cargo Space vs. Ken Kesey's Furthur Bus

In1964, writer Ken Kesey purchased a bus for the purpose of taking a cross country psychedelic trip (in both senses of the word) with the Merry Pranksters. At the wheel was Neal Cassidy, Jack Keroac's speedfreak buddy who was the model for Dean Moriarty in On the Road. It was an epic trip at the dawn of what we think of as the 60s. They even passed through Houston so that Kesey could meet up with his friend Larry McMurtrey. The whole thing was financed with the profits from Kesey's novel, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. And the trip was immortalized in Tom Wolfe's The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test. So how does the Cargo Space stack up?





Cargo Space vs. the Breaking Bad meth lab RV

This Sunday, the final episode of Breaking Bad airs. It's the story of Walter White, a chemistry teacher diagnosed with terminal cancer, who decides to manufacture methamphetimine in order to leave something behind for his family when he goes. He teams up with an small-time criminal Jesse Pinkman, and the pair initially cook their drugs in the RV below. Why in an RV? Because the process of cooking meth makes a very powerful and distinct odor, so being able to travel to some place remote, park, cook, then move on is very useful. Even if someone did notice the smell, Walt and Jesse would be gone before anyone put two and two together.

Is this realistic? If you've ever read Methland, the harrowing book about the effect of meth on one small town, you know it is. One of the things meth cooks do in that book is make miniature meth labs in liter-sized coke bottles, then strap the bottles to bicycles which they ride around town as the chemicals react. That way the smell is dissipated. This lead the town to literally outlaw bicycles.





The interior of the Breaking Bad RV was a little bit cramped, but highly functional.




Cargo Space vs. the Girls Gone Wild bus

There was a time in America when these buses criss-crossed America getting intoxicated college girls to take off their clothes on camera. Now that Joe Francis, the leader of the Girls Gone Wild empire, is in jail, I assume Girls Gone Wild is defunct--at least as a bus-based pornographic business.





I couldn't find any photos online of the inside of the bus. Just as well, I suppose. This is a family blog.



Cargo Space vs the Lost in America RV

The first part of this video clip is from the brilliant Albert Brooks movie, Lost in America. The second part is an ad with really loud music. You've been warned. The RV in the movie symbolizes their desire to escape their lives of quiet bourgeois desperation and their inability to leave bourgeois comforts behind.





Cargo Space vs. EM-50 Urban Assault Vehicle

In Stripes, this innocent looking RV turns out to be pretty bad-ass. Bill Murray and Ivan Reitman use it to rescue their hapless fellow soldiers from Czechoslovakia.







Can Cargo Space live up to its illustrious predecessors? Only time will tell.
