Lo-Cal Posting: The 2011 Art Car Parade

by Robert Boyd

Sometimes Pan don't like to think to hard. Here are some photos from the 2011 Art Car Parade, which I saw with my sister and her family and some friends and their families (it's kind of a family event). Minimal commentary on the photos--the sun baked my ability to write stuff right out of my head today. If you created one of these cars, please drop me a line and I will make sure you get credit!

One of many Scrap Daddy cars in the show--he always blows the competition away.

A knit cozy for this VW bug.

Photobucket

Loved this woolly mammoth.

Photobucket

Very clever construction kept the saw-blade spinning in this three-wheeled death-mobile. (Bike by Smitty Regula.)

Photobucket

I just thought the design on this bike was brilliant and beautiful.

Photobucket

The 1960s era Bat-mobile (or a replica) was in the show, but I liked this one much better.

Photobucket

They put every modern art cliche they could on this one. A "Calder" mobile, soft watches, a Campbell's Soup can, and...

Photobucket

...a Giacometti (I'm not sure what they are towing).

Photobucket

This one was more elegant and kept its count of art cliches to one.

A lovely Alice in Wonderland tableaux.

Scrapdaddy at the Artcar Museum

Mark David Bradford, aka Scrapdaddy, has been a major part of the art car scene in Houston for years. The Artcar Museum is hosting a retrospective of his amazing work--metal sculptures, some of them kinetic. Bradford is a master with hydraulics. But beyond the mechanical cleverness, Bradford creates beautiful textures and surfaces with the scrap metal he uses. This is an exhibit you don't want to miss. The video below gives you a feel of opening night.

My Favorite Art Cars 2010

Sorry Pan readers for being so lazy the pst week or so. I'll try to make up for it. As is my custom, I went to the Art Car Parade this year. I was with my brother, one of my sisters, and a niece and nephew. (We were supposed to meet my cousins but managed to never find them.) Great fun as usual, and unusually nice weather!

I don't know who created the cars below. If you do, please comment! But I liked them all.

Art Cars

This car was badass.

Dogs were a common theme. Why? Because everybody likes dogs I guess. (I'm more of a cat person, but that's OK. I like dogs, too.)

This one was actually the last car in the parade, and a good choice for the closer.

There were other animals, too.

I think this amazing vehicle was made by Mark Bradford, aka Scrap Daddy.

I thought this truck looked cool, and was amazed to see that it was a rolling tribute to Molly Ivins.

Last, here are two that use yarn.

It's a tough choice, but I think this last one is the most beautiful car. The colors and wavey patterns just feel right to me.

Scrapdaddy

Scrap Daddy
Last Friday, I was looking for parking for the Poissant Gallery show (great, by the way) and ended up parking next to the Scrapdaddy yard.

The proprietor and creative force, Mark Bradford, was working in the yard, spray painting vehicles. He was getting ready for the Art Car Parade. He invited me to look around. So I literally looked around--here is a 360 view of Scrap Daddy Design:

Neon Poisoning also has a few photos of the yard, too.

This is getting me in the mood for the parade. I'll be there with various brothers and sisters and nieces and nephews. Looks like Scrapdaddy is going all out this year--should be excellent.
