I went to the Texas Contemporary Art Fair last night, prepared to take photos of fabulous people (and probably mock them here, 'cause that's just how I roll). But luckily for them, the battery was dead on my camera. So instead I just made snarky comments to my friends about the attendees. I'm a bad person. (Of course, anyone who knows me can recognize the irony of me ridiculing any other person's appearance.)
One thing exciting about this event it that it marks the first time I ever got a press pass. They were setting the bar pretty low for press passes, obviously. Seriously, if you want a free pass, go onto their website and fill out a press application. Just make up an press outlet.
Lots of pieces of art were sold opening night, and a majority of them cost five dollars. The Rice Gallery had a set up where speed-painter Steve Keene was whipping up a whole mess of affordable masterpieces. It would be interesting at the end of the show to compare Rice's revenue with that of the commercial galleries at the show. Here's what I got:
Steve Keene, Stagecoach, acrylic on plywood, 2011
This painting cost less than the parking garage charged me. Long live the Duke!
